Diamond Head State Monument

Diamond Head State Monument

Image titleDiamond Head is unarguably one of the most recognized landmarks on Oahu. The military used Diamond Head as protection from attacks from the sea and ground assaults from the eastern shore of the island. The pillboxes and bunkers are still there today and are enjoyed by tourists and locals daily. While this hike is not your typical Honolulu hike that takes you into the natural beauty of the Hawaiian forest, it's still amazing in its own way.

Before you go:

Make sure you arrive with ample time before closing to really enjoy the view from the top without being rushed! Since this is a state monument, there is an entrance fee for visitors. Here are the fees so you are prepared:

Individuals are$5 per car or $1 per person for pedestrians

Commercial vehicles are $10 for cars/vans, $20 for mini busses, and $40 for busses.

Diamond Head State Monument is opened daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. When planning your day, please be aware that the last entrance to hike the trail is 4:30 PM. The gates will be locked at 6:00 PM and all visitors MUST be out of the park by this time! However, currently there are construction projects at the park that will affect opening days and hours. Please make sure to call if you plan on visiting before Dec 15, 2017. Feels free to visit their website by clicking here.

The Hike:

This hike is pretty short, about 0.8 miles each way. There are some parts where there are a good number of stairs, so please take precautions if you have a hurt knee. The trail may be a bit crowded and hot depending on the day and time you arrive. There are little to no shade on this trail, so please make precautions and pack enough water and sunscreen for you and your family. There are multiple places where you can enjoy the viewand each view is very different. On one side, you will be able to see west of Diamond Head. You can even see the west side of the island. If you walk down the stairs to the other lookout areas, you will be able to see the eastern shoreline and the Diamond Head Lighthouse. The Diamond Head lighthouse is not public, so please do not try to visit the lighthouse. It is the private residence to the Admiral of the United States Coast Guard, so there will be very few public tours. However, the USCG does open the lighthouse up to visitors on rare occasions.
