If you have been following the Hawaii news this week then you have probably heard about the recent Hepatitis A outbreak.  The Hawaii State Health Department closed all of the Genki Sushi locations to clean throughly on Oahu and Kauai due to tainted scallops earlier this week.  This is one of the worst Hepatitis A outbreaks with at least 168 people sickened by the virus and since the cause was just discovered there will probably be more people affected.  Two dozen of the people required hospitalization so it’s very important to get the vaccine as soon as possible.  The scallops were imported from the Philippines, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.  I ate at Genki Sushi Waipahu location a few weeks ago but luckily didn’t order the scallops so I’m hoping there wasn’t anymore cross-contamination.  Several healthcare providers are offering shots to reduce the outbreak exposure and prevent it from happening again.  I use Kaiser Permanente and they are now offering free shots either by appointment or during the walk-in times.

According to the Kaiser Permanente website here is some important facts about hepatitis A:

  • Transmission is usually person-to-person by fecal-oral route or through a contaminated vehicle such as food.

  • To help prevent the spread of hepatitis A you should wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water after using the restroom, changing a diaper, or before preparing food.

  • Symptoms of hepatitis A include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, dark urine and light colored feces, and abdominal discomfort followed by jaundice.
